Where Curiosity Gets Somewhere To Go

At six and seven, the job is not to teach a child to think. They already do that constantly. It is to give that thinking somewhere to land, and someone to share it with.

What changes

What Grades 1โ€“2 works on

Written as things you would actually notice at home, not as skills on a certificate.

  • Asks a question and stays with it long enough to find something out
  • Works beside another child without needing an adult to referee
  • Names what they are feeling instead of only showing it
  • Finishes something and is willing to show it to the room

The kind of work

What a project looks like

Illustrative of how sessions run rather than a fixed syllabus. The problems change so the thinking has to travel.

  • 01

Building a structure that has to hold something heavier than it looks

  • 02

Telling the same short story three ways and noticing what changed

  • 03

Sorting a pile of objects by a rule the child invents themselves

Questions

What parents of Grades 1โ€“2 children ask

Is my child too young for this?

Grades 1โ€“2 sessions are built around play and making, not instruction. There is no reading or writing requirement to take part.

How long is a session?

Sessions for this band are the shortest we run, pitched at the attention span of a six-year-old rather than a timetable.

Does my child need to already be confident in groups?

No. Quiet children are common in this band and the sessions are structured so that joining in does not require being loud.
