Glimmers Labs ยท Grades 3โ€“4

From Having Ideas To Making Them Work

This is the age where a child stops being satisfied with the first version. Given the chance, they will make the second one better, and that instinct is worth building on deliberately.

What changes

What Grades 3โ€“4 works on

Written as things you would actually notice at home, not as skills on a certificate.

  • Plans before building, rather than only during
  • Gives another child feedback that is useful rather than just kind or unkind
  • Changes their own work after hearing what did not land
  • Explains why they made a choice, not only what they chose

The kind of work

What a project looks like

Illustrative of how sessions run rather than a fixed syllabus. The problems change so the thinking has to travel.

  • 01

Designing something for a specific person's needs, then checking with them

  • 02

Running a small experiment where the result is genuinely unknown

  • 03

Taking apart a problem that looks like one problem and is actually three

Questions

What parents of Grades 3โ€“4 children ask

Will this help with school performance?

Indirectly. Labs are not tuition and do not follow a school syllabus. Children who plan, revise and explain their reasoning tend to do those things in class too.

What if my child is shy in groups?

Group work in this band is structured in pairs and threes rather than large teams, which is a very different experience for a quiet child.

Is there homework?

No. Anything a child continues at home is because they wanted to.
